Weaknesses
Risk management information
Environmental and social information

BT’s at a glance spread goes beyond a conventional breakdown of the business’ divisions. Information about its people, KPIs, capabilities, values and strategy is provided alongside a diagram showing the group’s operating structure. It’s a good approach – although it would also be useful to see the differentiation between its divisions up front.

The strategic information in the overview is expanded in the business review – and the KPIs used to measure progress are identified. The section on regulation, competition and prices is another strength, offering a relatively detailed look at wider market issues. And while it remains difficult to pick out key messages, BT has introduced tabbing, sub-contents per chapter and an index to aid navigation through the report.

One area where the report does fall short is its section on risk – where detail about mitigation activities is fairly limited. Environmental and social information might also be expanded.

Online
In many HTML reports a lack of design has been overcome by strong navigation – unfortunately BT falls down on both fronts. With limited information in the left-hand navigation bar, the user is forced to rely on the next/previous buttons or frequently return to the chapter landing page. Both options quickly become frustrating.
