Forward-looking information

Johnson Matthey is one of the few companies in the sample to provide an indication of staff turnover. In fact, Johnson Matthey’s coverage of employees is one of its strengths, incorporating information about communication and training policies, as well as specific initiatives during the past 12 months. Indicators relating to environmental, health and safety matters are also graphically presented, each including five years’ worth of data.

Environmental issues are integrated into the operating and financial review – and this information, relating to environmental legislation, gives an insight into the regulatory landscape. Where the report falls down is its lack of an up-front business overview. An ‘at a glance’ spread showing the structure of the business early in the report would be a useful addition. A greater degree of forward-looking information would also move the report forward.

Online
Navigation through Johnson Matthey’s OFR online is aided by sectional links along the top of the page and quick links alongside the text. The partial HTML report doesn’t offer HTML versions of its financial statements and it lacks a search facility – but it does provide links to relevant corporate responsibility information on the group’s corporate website.
