This report starts off fairly strongly with some good opening spreads, including a reasonable at a glance section. The strategic information is
well presented and develops common themes across a number of pages. The natural resource group’s markets receive two pages of decent discussion – more than most – including a separate analysis for each division.
Unfortunately, it then seems that the report runs out of steam a little bit. All the enthusiasm and thought seems to have been used up early on. There’s little to break up the text in the financial review and the corporate responsibility section is disappointing for a group in this sector.
The chairman states early on that corporate responsibility issues are crucial to the company, yet there is little evidence throughout the report to support this view. The corporate responsibility pages – and environmental information, in particular, given its mining activities – lack detailed information. Employees only warrant four paragraphs, despite the chairman earlier attributing the success of the group to them.
