Strengths:
Marketplace discussion
Forward-looking information
Weaknesses:
Corporate responsibility information
Employees
While a number of companies have promoted online communications in their printed reports this year, few have done so as directly as Legal & General. The group outlines its five strategic principles up front and focuses on each in turn at various points in the report. As well as providing information about how the strategy is being implemented, investors are directed online to find out more via a series of webcasts.
Back in the printed report, an overview of the business environment is followed by a discussion of the regulatory and political environment and market outlook. Further marketplace information is found within the divisional outlooks, offering a forward-looking perspective.
The biggest weaknesses are the corporate responsibility and employee content. The information provided is relatively limited and lacks metrics – and there is a failure to integrate this information within the rest of the report.
Online:
A key focus of Legal & General’s online report is the five videos in which the group’s strategic principles are discussed. But there’s more to this report than multimedia. Users are able to create their own charts, view data in Excel and produce a bespoke report by selecting the sections they would like to download. Links to related information are also provided throughout.
