Strengths:
Forward-looking information KPIs
Weaknesses:
Business overview Continues to lag behind most of its peers
Each year, we see slight improvements in Next's annual report. This year, for example, the retail group clearly identifies its KPIs - including non-financial measures such as the number of customers and retail selling space. It also covers the marketplace, albeit very briefly, offering its views on the retail economy in the year ahead.

The group continues to provide a degree of forward-looking information, such as the amount it expects to spend on refitting stores in the coming year and its priorities for 2008. Yet, it still struggles with areas that others find straightforward. The cursory business overview gives little indication about the structure of the company, while strategic information is restricted to five bullet points.

Despite edging forwards, Next's scores remain low across all of the criteria. The problem is that the level of detail provided still falls far below that provided by the majority of the FTSE 100.

Online:
This year, Next has provided its annual report as a converted PDF - image-based document, featuring a chapter selection, search facility and download centre.
