Strengths:
Business description
Strategy
Weaknesses:
Marketplace information
Non-financial KPIs
Like many others, Reed Elsevier’s report features a section entitled ‘Our business’. The 12-page section provides a relatively detailed description of the business and its three divisions, as well as information about resources – including employees – principal risks and financial key performance indicators. What’s unusual about Reed Elsevier’s report is that this section is sandwiched between the directors’ remuneration report and financial statements – and doesn’t appear until page 80.
The front of the report does include brief descriptions of the three divisions up front. A clear overview also lists the group’s strengths and outlines its strategy, which is then referred to through the chairman and chief executive’s report and the divisional reviews.
The biggest weakness relates to non-financial KPIs, which are lacking across the report. Information about Reed Elsevier’s wider markets is also limited and provides only a very broad overview.

A fairly typical converted PDF - image-based document accompanies the standard PDF version of Reed Elsevier’s annual report. Thumbnail views, chapter selection, a search facility and print basket are offered.
