‘At a glance’ group overview
Employee information
Smiths Group notes that it has changed its reporting style this year. The result is a report lacking the appeal of many of its peers.
One feature it has maintained is its distinct divisional overviews, incorporating a description of the division, the number of employees, principal operating regions, contribution to group sales, and key customers. It’s just a shame that this type of information isn’t collated at the front of the report. Employee coverage is another area where the report lags behind, while the discussion of corporate responsibility issues is fairly limited.
However, it’s not all bad news. The chief executive’s description of the Full Potential process and the six strengths that underpin it provides useful strategic information. It even shows how the performance of these strengths is measured. Marketplace coverage is also relatively strong, discussing the growth drivers in each of Smiths’ key markets.
Online
What the Smiths online report lacks in imaginative design, it almost makes up for in clarity and functionality. The full HTML report offers users a search option, print basket and download centre – including PDF and Excel downloads – while its clean presentation makes using the report a straightforward process.
