Strengths:
Integrated corporate responsibility
KPIs
Weaknesses:
Marketplace discussion
Legalistic risk management
Standard Chartered’s content is all reasonably good but what makes this report stand out is its ability to integrate that content into more of a cohesive whole. For example, the corporate responsibility information isn’t the best in the FTSE 100 – it’s good – but what takes it to a new level is the way it is integrated into the wider thinking. It’s mentioned throughout the report, not just tucked away in a double-page spread towards the end. Similarly, not only are financial and non-financial KPIs clearly detailed, they are linked back to the strategic aims. Charting the KPIs would have made them even more successful.
The risk management review offers a good introduction but then the rest of the risk section suffers from being slightly legalistic – like many in its sector. The marketplace discussion is slightly lacking and disparate, too. Minor complaints for a good report with a great index. The enthralled ‘employees’ on page 27 are definitely worth a look.
Online:
This is a neat and effective HTML report with some good navigation from the home page. There are few bells and whistles but it’s all done fairly well and is mainly easy to move around. There are occasional near dead-ends – for example, the text-based alternatives for five-year review graphs. The download centre can also be frustratingly slow.
