Strengths:
Corporate responsibility integration Risk management information
Weaknesses:
Marketplace discussion Business overview
Designed to tell the Tesco story, the retailer’s 2007 review is bright and interesting. It’s also notable for the way in which corporate responsibility issues are integrated within the ‘story’ – including information about environmental and social matters, employees and suppliers.

Much of what is discussed can be related to Tesco’s four-point strategy but this isn’t explicit in the review. Comparable measures showing progress are also lacking from the review. However, an explanation of the strategy and a range of KPIs can be found in the report. To get the complete picture, it’s necessary to read both documents.

The highlight of the report is its risk management narrative. Each risk is clearly headlined and accompanied by information about mitigation. On the downside, information about the wider market is limited across both documents – and the set would benefit from an overview of the business up front.

Online:
Only Tesco’s review is available in HTML format, which is a shame given the way information is divided between the report and review. The bright, colourful style of the printed review isn’t reflected online, but the design is clear and navigating through the Tesco story is straightforward.
